John Olvey combines saltwater, acrylic and soul to create an artistic expression of the surf lifestyle. John’s art is a combination of acrylic, saltwater, and soul, artfully depicting the sand, waves and surf motion as viewed from a lone surfer’s perspective.
With passion and purpose, John offers a secret glimpse into the challenging lifestyle surfers have chosen. It’s a near mystical existence where man meets nature, and conquers it without ever defacing its beauty. John’s work portrays the pure perfection of the moving canvas a surfer chooses to ride, and the pure euphoria of being one with nature.
John is a lifelong resident of the Texas Gulf Coast and has surfed and created art since childhood. He is committed to artistic expression of the surf lifestyle to canvas, paper, surfboards and wood.
John is a renowned surfer and has proven his artistic skills in the watery medium at numerous state and national competitions for forty years. John is one of the most competitive surfers in Texas. He has won over 17 first place State titles and three first place National titles.
John’s artwork has moved from the top of a gliding surfboard to his painting studio in Corpus Christi, Texas. John takes his skill and knowledge of the ocean to dramatic and fantastic depictions of his life experiences.
John studied fine art at the University of Houston where he got his undergraduate degree. John has also studied and produced art with famed surf artists from California and Hawaii. His style is an amalgam of local lore and exotic locales.
John’s most recent show is at the Texas Surf Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is also currently working on a new series that will be featured as a one-man show opening during the week of a statewide surfing event in Texas.
John has donated art and participated in the Coastal bend AIDS FOUNDATION “Art Under the Stars,” the Corpus Christi Advertising Federation, the Texas Surfrider Association, the Texas Gulf Surfing Association, the United States Surfing Federation and Bay Area Fellowship Church and various local elementary school fundraisers.
